AMAG receives ASI certification for comprehensive sustainability activities

19.10.2020

  • Certification against ASI Chain of Custody Standard broadens AMAG’s sustainability efforts towards including the supply chain
  • AMAG ready to offer certified aluminium to customers as another cornerstone in AMAG’s specialties portfolio
  • Certified against ASI Performance Standard since 2018
  • Sustainability is an essential pillar of AMAG’s strategy

AMAG’s strategic focus is on innovative special products and sustainability. The confirmation of compliance with comprehensive sustainability standards by independent third-party institutions plays a crucial role for the assurance of transparency and quality.

Since the certification of the Ranshofen plant against the ASI Performance Standard in 2018, AMAG guarantees the compliance with strict environmental, social and governance criteria.

With the recently completed certification against the ASI Chain of Custody Standard AMAG takes its sustainability activities up to another level by extending its efforts beyond the confines of the Ranshofen site. AMAG supports the application of the same strict standards and criteria to which the company has submitted itself voluntarily among its pre-material suppliers. With the involvement of the whole supply chain, from the mining of Bauxite to the AMAG product, AMAG is now ready to offer ASI certified aluminium to its customers.

„AMAG has already been focusing on responsible and resource-conserving production of aluminium for many years. Particularly, our competence in recycling is acknowledged throughout the world. The ASI Chain of Custody Certification enables us to expand our range of specialties by adding sustainably sourced products. Even before the official launch of sales, ASI certified aluminium stirred up great interest amongst customers of the automotive and packaging industries”, says AMAG CEO Gerald Mayer.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We warmly congratulate AMAG on their ASI Chain of Custody Certification. Having a scrap utilization rate of 75-80 % already gives the plant a good foundation for offering a relatively low-carbon product to their downstream customers and supports the circular economy. With their dual certification now in place, this gives their aluminium outputs additional sustainability credentials that will add important value to the key downstream sectors that they supply.”

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI)

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a global non-profit standard setting and certification organization, founded in 2012. It brings together various stakeholders in the aluminium value chain. It works toward responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium following an entire value chain approach. To this end, ASI launched its Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard in December 2017.

The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain.

The ASI Chain of Custody Standard (CoC) sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for CoC Material, which is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard enables a link between verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain under the ASI Performance Standard, to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities.

AMAG is a founding member of the ASI, and, as such, played a decisive role in its development process.
