In this Blog Mr. Leimhofer, head of Chemical Analytisis at AMAG, tells us about his field of activity 'Chemical Analysis of hot rolling emulsions'.

After completing my Industrial Chemistry and Engineering studies in Linz, I worked briefly in an internationally active Japanese firm before coming to AMAG as a chemist in 1998. I took over as the head of Chemical Analysis in 2000. I am fascinated by the wide range of duty within my job. The analyses we carry out cover water, hot rolling emulsions, cold rolling oils, metals, emissions, etc., and affect every area of AMAG. Another thing I appreciate is the chance to lead interesting projects that can improve our quality and processes.

The quality of these products, which are used for example in the aerospace industry, is dependent on the hot rolling process and the hot rolling emulsion used for this process.

Generally speaking, an emulsion is a finely spread mixture of two liquids that would not normally mix. In this case, the hot rolling emulsion is a mixture of oil in water. It is used as a coolant and a lubricant during hot rolling.

The key factors for perfect lubrication are oil content, viscosity, fatty acid esters, droplet size and the quality of water used. We use fully desalinated water purified with reverse osmosis. Normal drinking water wouldn’t meet our quality requirements.


The emulsion is collected in the dirt tank after use. It is then sent through filters to filter out the fine particles abraded during the rolling process, before being returned to the clean tank. This saves on rolling oil.
